Day 66 – Invercargill to Bluff

Invercargill to Bluff – 36kms

Total – 1302kms

Dad started with me along the estuary walkway and we walked for a while together before he shot ahead to jog the rest of the way. He had to stop at 17kms unfortunately due to pain in his knee.

The first 10kms were along the estuary before coming out on to SH1 all the way to Bluff. Then it was up to Bluff Hill lookout which had great views in all directions. I saw Charlie and Dave up there too. Then down the other side and around the coast on a really nice track to finish at Stirling Point.

It is a strange feeling to be finished. We spent maybe an hour there. Took a few photos and sat around a bit soaking it in. I called home straight away to share the moment with Katie and the kids when I first got there. A bus load of elderly tourists passed a hat around and gave me a cash donation towards Alzheimers Northland.

I have received an amazing amount of support from friends, family and people I have met along the way which has really helped to keep me motivated during the hard times. A special mention for my support crew (dad and Janeen) for comiting to follow me all the way to the end even though they did not get to do the walk like they had planned to. And of course I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without the support of my wonderful wife who has encouraged me from the moment I first said I wanted to walk the length of New Zealand and held the fort at home while I have been away doing it.

I have a few days in Invercargill before flying home on Monday. It has been an amazing adventure that will take some time to sink in and reflect on. Now I just can’t wait to get home!
